Living a Google-Free Digital Life: The Why and the How
**THIS VIDEO IS NOT SPONSORED IN ANY WAY. None of the links below are affiliate links.**
Over the past several years, I've been slowly moving away from Google Services. This includes Google Search, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Chrome, and more.
In this video, I share a little bit about why I decided to leave Google and where I've gone. I share ten Google services that make up 95% of my Google usage and talk about the best alternatives and what I'm personally using.
This is a little bit different than some of my other videos. But I've mentioned leaving Google in past videos and wanted to answer all the related questions I've been receiving.

    Hey! Thank you for this tutorial. I have a few questions. 1. When I look at my graph view, I see several of these "<% tp.date.now("YYYY-MM-DD-dddd", 1) %>". It looks really messy. What can I do about it? When I click on them, it opens a folder in "timestamps". 2. Can you say more about "+ Add Property? What can we do with that? 3. Under "Notes" I see some code: <% tp.file.cursor() %>. Is that supposed to be visible in my new note? What purpose does it serve? I don't see code anywhere else in my new note. I don't think whatever it is supposed to do is working. 4. How can I switch out/add emoji's? Not as big a deal as the first two questions, but I would like to replace the thumbs down emoji with something a little more uplifted and encouraging. Thank you for this tutorial!

    Great video! This worked perfectly for me, thanks for sharing! If you don't mind, just as a small bit of feedback: it seems like you forgot to share the bucket policy link, it'd be great if you could add that so that we don't have to write it manually. Aside from that, I wanted to ask you if you find any big disadvantages to having a static website hosted on aws s3? I inted to combine this with Route 53 and CloudFront to manage it more effectively, as it's quite cheaper than my current Wordpress hosting provider.

    One book I’d recommend reading if you haven’t already is 4000 Weeks by Oliver Burkeman! If it resonates with you, this could be a 6th book that helps you embrace the limitations of yourself/your productivity system and proceed forward with better clarity/perspective. (I need to read it again and take smart notes to better articulate this, haha!) Thanks for your videos! I need to go back and read these books more thoroughly - I know I’ve definitely engaged with the ideas of all of them (watching videos, etc.) but I think I’ve only read Atomic Habits and the Headspace book cover to cover. Keep up the good work!

    "Treat it like a living knowledge base"... if you are fully atomic or nearly so, then make a line a he op and with a new time/date stamp add the new edited version... you can then see your editing stack very easily. If that is important to you... Also, some plugins will list those notes added/edited that week, for the weekly review.

    • @DannBerg
      @DannBerg 12 днів тому

      Great idea about adding timestamps notating all the editing dates. Can definitely make it useful to see the larger context of what you were working on/editing at the time

    Thank you for this wonderful video. I use Obsidian to write about history. Keeping track of historical "people" is key. Your "meeting notes" video also helped me figure out how to (dataview) list all the historical events that include a specific individual. Very cool! I am wondering, though, how to tweak it so that the dataview filters ALL folders in the vault. Instead of taking only the files FROM, in your example, "Timestamps/Meetings" -- I want to all folders to be included. OR, even better, if I use no folders at all, how can I ask dataview to search the root directory of files?

    • @DannBerg
      @DannBerg 12 днів тому

      Do you have access to ChatGPT? If so, you can just say "write me a Dataview table for Obsidian that shows [enter description here]" and it should spit out the code you need. This has sped up my own process SO MUCH. I used to write all my tables by hand, and now I offload much of that work to AI.

    Dann, thanks for your excellent instructions. I have been doing Obsidian for years. In the last year I decided to be able to find the needle in the haystack. I have no background so following the videos of others has been unproductive! Here is how you are helping grandma. 1. Instructions on your blog fit you video instruction 2. You showed me how to convert to the raw version of the template. Also, you provide the template. I have wasted hours trying to reproduce files and failing. 3. You go step by step including each mechanical change with the reasons why. 4. You are slow enough and crystal clear. (I still get lost, but that is not your problem) I am going to at least try everything that you suggest. So Bravo from Grandma (over 75 and no computer background)

    This was an interesting video. I'm curious what you think about Microsoft as a replacement for Google? We have the family plan that gives up to 6 people 1TB on Onedrive, which is very shareable. And of course the Office apps and Outlook are far superior. It only costs $99.99/yr. Individual plans are only $69.99/yr. We still use Google photos, but most everything else but my blog and UA-cam are out of that ecosystem. Thanks again for the video.

    I have had this want to leave Google for a while, but I am too hooked into a lot of things, so reading the title of your video I thought "alright, here's someone who has done it. let's hear it" - but then you are basically still with Google across the board. As far as them getting your data and you are the customer, they don't need to you to be on gmail as long as you are on pretty much every other thing of theirs. You're not living "google-free" at all. Don't get me wrong, I am not blaming you. I'm exactly the same.

    • @DannBerg
      @DannBerg Місяць тому

      I disagree that I’m still using Google “across the board.” I’m completely off Google Search, Gmail, and Google Calendar. I no longer use a Google browser. All my files are stored on a NAS instead of Drive. All my personal writing happens in Obsidian. There are a handful of minor Google services I still use, sure, but I see a clear path off them if I want (and shared that in the video). For me, it’s not about withholding all my personal data from Google’s clutches. But rather removing dependence for all Google’s key services, which I definitely have done. I’m curious how you see my current level of Google use as still being “across the board.”

    • @tubehenry
      @tubehenry Місяць тому

      @@DannBerg Yes, but Google has you if you are only on ONE of their services, and you have several that you are "sort of" off, but not really. If your intention is to be "off the grid" as it were, at least from Google, the truth is that they still have you. Being part of more of their services just makes it easier for them to track you. @@tubehenry I never wanted to be off-the-grid in terms of Google. I more think it's about conscious consumption. There are a few select Google tools where I'm still trading my data for a free service. But all the key services in my digital world are now non-Google. I also outline a very short path I could take to get there, if I really wanted to. And thus, could be followed by anyone watching.

    Thanks for the video. I also want to escape Google captivity. But it’s sticky and hard to break out for sure. I use google docs a lot and also use Butterdocs, which I like but it does not replace Google docs. I wish Apple equivalent was better but its not. I tried Proton but without a writing app like Docs I couldnt do it. I really wish some big company could challenge Google, and I dont understand why not. Anyways thanks for the video. We need to talk more about things like this.

      Yeah, Google Docs is such a difficult one for competitors to beat, it seems. I’m also waiting for a solid alternative. Bummer that ButterDocs isn’t there yet. Maybe Apple will improve over time? Fingers crossed.

    I love your approach, Dann. It's pragmatic, no-nonsense, and focused on the actual use, not just playing with Obsidian as a cool toy (which it is... but). Thank you!

    Excellent video! Really well done and I know it's good advice as it is all sorts of things I've learnt or thought about over the course of trying to work with such systems. Setting things up in advance and trying to squeeze into someone else's system is a huge trap in the productivity sphere. It needs to be called out often. Inspiration is fine but nothing beats getting on with it, feeling the pain and then adapting your system to resolve that pain

    I am having a little trouble with the "- <% tp.file.cursor() %>" line. Once I load the template, I am not getting a cursor placement, I am just getting the raw code in that spot. Do you have any ideas on what might be going on?

      That needs to be enabled in the Templater settings. I believe it’s a checkbox that needs to be toggled on

    Great video, got me in the path I want for my people notes. Quick note, maybe useful, not sure. I think that, in the people template, the meetings dataview could be something like this: ```dataview TABLE file.cday as Created, summary AS "Summary" FROM "Timestamps/Meetings" AND [[]] SORT file.cday DESC ``` I believe it should work as expected and theres no need to include the note title in the query.
